Dave Gallaher Memorial Park Campaign
Making rugby great in Dave Gallaher’s native area – Can you help?

This is the new Letterkenny Rugby Football Club ground – which is
named ‘Dave Gallaher Memorial Park’. It is just off the road from
Letterkenny to Ramelton, down which five-year-old Dave Gallaher and his
family travelled on their way to a new life in New Zealand in 1878.
Letterkenny Rugby Club was formed in 1973 and we have had various homes
since then. You can read our history on our club
website.
We are now in the process of constructing the best pitch and club
facilities in our 32-year history. It is a huge undertaking for a tiny
club but these are exciting times at Lettekenny Rugby Club and we believe
that – if we act now – rugby can have a massive future in our area.
Some years back, we put a youth structure in place and are now
experiencing an unprecedented level of interest of in rugby from all parts
of the community. This enthusiasm has been matched with unprecedented
success in playing terms. Remember we are a very small club and rugby is
the fourth sport in our town.
- Our Under 18 squad made a
provincial Ulster semi-final only to lose to a Banbridge team with 8
Ulster caps and 4 Ireland Youth Internationals
- Our unbeaten Under 16 team
won the provincial league, and then triumphed in the final at Ravenhill,
Belfast to win the Ulster Under 16 Fleming Cup.
- Our Under 14 team drew the
Ulster Under 14 Shield final with Clogher Valley.
- Next season for the first
time, we will field an Under-12 team and Mini-Rugby and at Under 10’s
and Under 8’s.
Facilities needed for our
kids
To allow our young people inspired by the story of Dave Gallaher to play
rugby, we need good facilities at Dave Gallaher Park. At the moment, we
have got just enough funds for a pitch and very basic changing rooms.
Donegal winters are long and dark, and we’d like to try and install
floodlights and other facilities to help our kids be the best rugby
players they can be.
Whether you are in New Zealand or Ireland, if you are interested in
sponsoring or supporting our efforts, do get in touch by

we will send you all the information you need.
Alternatively, if you know someone who loves rugby and who might be
inspired by Dave Gallaher story and our plans to honour this rugby great,
please tell them about this site.
